Khafre reopens, Menkaure closes

On 11 September 2026 Egypt's antiquities authority reopened the Pyramid of Khafre to visitors and closed the Pyramid of Menkaure for maintenance. Here is what changed, why the pyramids take turns, what you see inside Khafre, and how to plan a visit that goes underground.

Three big pyramids stand at Giza, and you can climb inside more than one of them. Which ones are open changes from year to year. The antiquities authority runs a rotation: one interior closes for cleaning and repairs while the others stay open, to keep the site open to visitors without a break.

The latest turn came in September 2026. Khafre, the middle pyramid, is open again. Menkaure, the smallest, has closed, and no reopening date was given. For most visitors the headline does not change much: the Great Pyramid of Khufu remains the one people come to enter. For anyone who wanted a quieter interior, or who missed out on a Khufu slot, Khafre is now the obvious second choice. The pyramids tour with entry inside Khufu has the Great Pyramid interior ticket in its booking.

The quick answer

Since a board decision announced on 11 September 2026, the Pyramid of Khafre is open to visitors and the Pyramid of Menkaure is closed for routine maintenance, with no end date. The Great Pyramid of Khufu has its own interior ticket and limited numbers. Interior tickets are separate from the plateau ticket, and the rotation can change again at short notice, so check egymonuments.gov.eg or ask at the gate.

Is the Pyramid of Menkaure closed in 2026?

Yes, the interior is closed. The board of the Supreme Council of Antiquities approved the closure, together with the reopening of Khafre, in a decision reported on 11 September 2026.

The decision came at a board meeting chaired by the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, according to SEE News. Egypt Independent called it a temporary closure for routine maintenance under a rotating system across the Giza pyramids, meant to keep the site open to tourists without a gap. Neither report gave a date for Menkaure to reopen.

The closure is about going inside. You can still walk up to Menkaure, see the red granite blocks at its base and photograph the three small queens' pyramids beside it. The shuttle buses on the plateau stop near it, as they do at the other two pyramids. Our post on the new entrance explains how the buses work.

Why do the Giza pyramids close in rotation?

Visitors bring moisture, dust and warm breath into narrow stone passages. The authority closes one interior at a time for cleaning and repairs, and opens another in its place.

This is not new. In November 2018 Khafre reopened after work on its wooden walkway and stairs, a new lighting system, strengthening of weak sections of the corridors and the burial chamber, and cleaning of the granite coffin. On the same occasion the ministry closed Menkaure, and Egyptian Streets described the rotation in the same terms used in 2026. In May 2023 it was Khufu's turn: Egypt Independent reported the Great Pyramid closing for periodic internal maintenance against dust, moisture and visitors' breath, with a reopening set for about a month later.

Menkaure has had attention on the outside too. In January 2024 a plan to put fallen granite casing blocks back on the pyramid caused an outcry among archaeologists. An expert committee led by Zahi Hawass advised against it, and the plan was dropped in February 2024, as Smithsonian Magazine reported. That project was about the outer casing. The 2026 closure concerns the inside.

What is inside the Pyramid of Khafre?

A passage down into the bedrock and a long burial chamber with a gabled limestone roof and a granite sarcophagus. Like Khufu's, the walls are bare stone.

Khafre's pyramid has two entrances on its north side, one in the face about 11.5 metres up and one at the base, according to Wikipedia. The lower passage is cut into the bedrock. Both routes lead to a horizontal corridor and the burial chamber, a room about 14 metres long and 5 metres wide carved into the rock, with a pointed roof of limestone beams. The granite sarcophagus sits partly sunk into the floor. When the explorer Giovanni Belzoni got in on 2 March 1818, hoping for an untouched burial, he found the chamber empty apart from the open sarcophagus and its broken lid.

What to expect as a visitor: a stooping walk down, then up, then a large plain room. There are no paintings and no inscriptions to read, apart from an old Arabic graffito on a wall. People do not go in for decoration. They go in to stand in a room cut into the rock under the second-largest pyramid at Giza. Ask at the entrance which passage is in use on the day.

What do you miss with Menkaure closed?

The interior with the first decoration found inside any pyramid: an antechamber with carved niches like a palace front, and a burial chamber lined with red granite.

Menkaure's pyramid is small, but its rooms are among the most interesting at Giza. A descending passage leads to an antechamber whose long walls carry eleven niches on each side, imitating the front of a palace. Wikipedia calls it the first decoration in the internal rooms of any pyramid. Further down, the burial chamber is lined with red Aswan granite under a roof of granite beams set in a chevron.

The king's basalt sarcophagus is not there. It was found in 1837, crated and shipped from Alexandria towards England, and the ship carrying it, the Beatrice, sank in a storm in 1838. Only drawings remain. If you planned your trip around Menkaure, keep an eye on the authority's announcements: in the rotation pattern, the next change could bring it back. For now, Khafre and Khufu are the two big interiors on offer.

Khufu or Khafre: which pyramid should you go inside?

Go into Khufu if you will only go into one pyramid: the Grand Gallery is the reason. Pick Khafre if Khufu slots are gone, or if you want fewer people and a less cramped climb.

The Great Pyramid gives you the most to see. You enter through the Robbers' Tunnel, climb the Ascending Passage, about 1.05 metres high and some 39 metres long, bent over most of the way, and then stand up in the Grand Gallery, about 46.7 metres long and 8.6 metres high (Wikipedia). At the top is the King's Chamber with its empty granite sarcophagus. Numbers inside are limited and there is no official daily figure; tickets go early in the busy season.

Khafre is a shorter trip into a single big chamber. Some local guides suggest it as the quieter choice. Both passages are hot, humid and steep, so neither suits anyone with severe claustrophobia, bad knees or breathing problems. Photo rules inside have changed over the years and sources disagree: ask at the entrance before you take your phone out. Our guide to going inside the Great Pyramid covers the climb in more detail.

How do you plan a visit around the closures?

Decide which interior you want, then check that it is open the week you travel. Buy the interior ticket with the plateau ticket, by card, and go early.

Start with egymonuments.gov.eg, the ministry's ticket site, and confirm at the gate on the day. The plateau ticket does not cover any interior. The QR entry ticket listing says so plainly: interior tickets are bought separately at the site. Ticket desks at Giza have been cashless since 2 June 2023 (Egyptian Streets), so carry a card. The plateau opens early in the morning, 7 am in most 2026 guides. Do the interior first, before the passages warm up and the coach groups arrive.

On a tour, read the inclusions line by line. The Khufu entry tour lists the Khufu interior ticket. The half-day tour names entry inside the Great Pyramid among its inclusions, with plateau tickets tied to the option you book. The Hurghada day trip lists the burial chamber of Cheops or Chephren, the Greek names for Khufu and Khafre. A tour cannot promise that an interior is open on your date: the antiquities authority decides.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pyramid of Menkaure open to visitors?

Not inside. The Supreme Council of Antiquities closed the interior for routine maintenance in a decision reported on 11 September 2026, with no end date. You can still see the outside and the queens' pyramids.

Can you go inside the Pyramid of Khafre in 2026?

Yes. Khafre reopened to visitors with the same decision that closed Menkaure. It needs its own interior ticket, separate from the plateau ticket. Check egymonuments.gov.eg before you go, since the rotation can change.

Is the Great Pyramid of Khufu open inside?

Khufu's interior was open in 2026 guides, with its own ticket and limited numbers. Khufu was last closed for maintenance for about a month in May 2023. Buy early in the day and confirm at the gate.

Why are some pyramids closed to tourists?

Breath, sweat and dust raise humidity and wear the stone in the narrow passages. Egypt closes one interior at a time for cleaning and repairs and opens another, so that visitors still have an interior to enter.
