Booking choice: The half-day pyramids and Sphinx tour, 5 to 6 hours. Book this Tour details
Giza is on the edge of the desert, and there is almost no shade on the plateau. In August the average high in Giza is about 95 F (35 C). In January it is about 67 F (19 C). That gap is the main reason the season matters more here than at most sights.
Time of day matters nearly as much. Tour buses arrive mid-morning, and with them the crowds and the sellers. This guide covers the month, the hour, how long to allow, and what changes on Fridays and during Ramadan.
The quick answer
Go between October and April, when Giza is cooler, and arrive when the plateau opens in the morning, before the tour buses at about 9:30 to 10 am. Allow two to three hours for the plateau, more with a pyramid interior, and a full day if you add the Grand Egyptian Museum.
What is the best month to visit the pyramids in Egypt?
October to April. The cool season runs from early December to early March, with average highs below 72 F (22 C); November and late February to April are warm and pleasant.
Weather data for Giza from WeatherSpark puts the hot season from mid-May to early October, with average highs above 90 F (32 C). Rain is rare in any month. The same source rates late February to late April and mid-October to early December as the best stretches for sightseeing, with a peak in mid-November.

What is the best month to go to Egypt?
For a trip built around Cairo and the pyramids, October to April. Summer suits a Red Sea beach holiday better than a day on the plateau.
Most first trips to Egypt mix sightseeing with the coast. If you are based in Hurghada in summer, a day at the pyramids is still possible: the flight day from Hurghada flies you to Cairo and back in 16 to 17 hours. Expect heat at Giza, and be glad of the museum hours indoors.
October to April is also when most visitors come. The crowds gather around the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx at mid-morning, and the edges of the day stay calmer.

What time should you go to the pyramids?
At opening. The plateau opens early in the morning, at 7 am in most 2026 guides, and the big groups arrive at about 9:30 to 10 am.
The first two hours are the best of the day. The air is cooler, the light is soft and low, and you can get the Great Pyramid in a photo without a crowd at its base. Guides on the ground report that sellers and crowds peak at about 10:30 to 11 am. Check the current hours on egymonuments.gov.eg before you go: closing time changes between winter and summer and is not published in one fixed form, so plan to finish by mid-afternoon.
Late afternoon is the second choice, for warm light and fewer groups, but last entry is earlier than many people expect. Sunset in Giza ranges from about 4:54 pm in early December to about 8 pm in early July, per WeatherSpark, and the plateau closes well before the later sunsets.
Out early and back by mid-afternoon: the half-day tour collects you from your hotel with an Egyptologist and covers the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple.
Book thisHow much time do you need to see the Pyramids of Giza?
Two to three hours for the plateau. Add about an hour for a pyramid interior, and make it a full day with the Grand Egyptian Museum.
The plateau is bigger than it looks, but the shuttles shorten it. A typical order: the Great Pyramid, the shuttle to the Panorama point for the view of all the pyramids in a line, Khafre and Menkaure, then down to the Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Khafre.
| Plan | Time on site | Fits with |
|---|---|---|
| Plateau, Sphinx and Valley Temple | 2 to 3 hours | Half-day tour |
| Plateau plus Khufu's interior | 3 to 4 hours | Khufu tour |
| Plateau plus the Grand Egyptian Museum | A full day | Pyramids and museum day |
| Saqqara, Memphis and Giza | A full day | Saqqara day |

Is a half-day pyramids tour long enough?
Yes, for the plateau. The half-day listing runs five to six hours including hotel transfers, with about two hours at the pyramids and stops at the Sphinx and the Valley Temple.
The OceanAir half day is built around the morning: pickup from your Cairo or Giza hotel, two hours at the pyramids with an Egyptologist, an optional camel ride, 30 minutes at the Sphinx and 15 at the Valley Temple, then back. The plateau tickets, lunch and the camel ride come with the matching option. The listing asks you to bring comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a sun hat.
What it does not cover is the Grand Egyptian Museum. If you have one day in Cairo and want both, book the full day instead.

An Egyptologist, the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, and back at your hotel by mid-afternoon, before the worst of the heat.
Book this Tour detailsCan you visit the pyramids in summer?
Yes, but plan around the heat: arrive at opening, carry water, cover up from the sun and be off the open plateau by late morning.
From mid-May to early October the average high in Giza is above 90 F (32 C), and the plateau is open sand and stone. Wear a hat, light long sleeves and sunglasses. Keep the interior for the start of the visit, when the passages are cooler. Use the electric shuttle between stops rather than walking.
A good summer plan: plateau at opening, then the Grand Egyptian Museum for the hot middle of the day. On Wednesdays and Saturdays its galleries stay open to 9 pm, per the official ticket site.
Can you visit the pyramids during Ramadan?
Yes. Sites stay open, with shorter hours reported. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 or 9 February, depending on the moon sighting.
Ramadan 2027 is projected to start on about 8 February and end around 9 or 10 March, per The National; Egypt's own announcement may differ by a day. Guides report that Egyptian sites open later and close earlier during the month. Check egymonuments.gov.eg for the current hours, and read our post on Ramadan 2027 opening hours.
The UK Foreign Office asks visitors to respect the fast: it is culturally insensitive to eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours, and modest dress matters more during the month. Drink your water discreetly on the plateau. Traffic gets heavy just before sunset, when people head home to break the fast.

Which day of the week is quietest at the pyramids?
Friday is the Egyptian weekend and brings more local visitors, though the midday prayer can quieten the plateau. The hour you arrive matters more than the day.
There are no separate Friday hours. Guides on the ground say local visitors come in larger numbers on Fridays. Arrive at opening on any day and you will beat most of the crowd.
